Job opening: Director
Due to great demand, the young but popular theatre company English Theatre Utrecht is looking to expand its repertoire with a second annual production. To make this happen, we are looking for a talented director with a desire to showcase his/her creative vision with an international amateur cast.
English Theatre Utrecht (ETU) started in 2017 as an international amateur group created by a group of actors who performed in a student theatre production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Cultural Centre Parnassos. They decided they wanted more and found a great want for cultural and creative activities among internationals living in and around Utrecht. They got together with their director and hit it off. ETU produces English-language theatre productions that are accessible for native speakers and non native speakers alike. Their first production (Pride & Prejudice) sold out in days, and requests for more ETU keep rolling in.
Today, ETU is a non-profit organization run by volunteers, and its success is owed to the great enthusiasm and devotion of its board, production team, creative team and actors. We currently have the capacity to perform one play per year, which is prepared with weekly evening gatherings over the course of five months, as well as a rehearsal weekend. This means that we are constantly turning away enthusiastic actors and other creatives who want to join. With an extra director, our capacity will allow for one or more extra productions, so that ETU can gain more members and grow into something even better.
What are we looking for
We are looking for a director who is available for at least three hours per week in weekly evening rehearsals, along with a full rehearsal weekend, regular production meetings and three performance days.
Our dream director is an enthusiastic freelancer who feels at ease speaking and writing English, and who knows how to work with international amateurs in a safe and stimulating environment. He or she has great ideas about creating productions that allow for larger groups of actors with worthwhile parts, and the experience and know-how to put everything together from start to finish.
The director will be working with a production team (with roles like stage manager, set design, etc), and answer to the producer. They can also receive help and tips from the artistic director.
What do we offer
We offer the unique opportunity of executing your creative vision together with a very enthusiastic international company. Although ETU is mainly a volunteer organisation, we are able to offer our directors a modest fee.
I want this! Who should I contact?
Please send your CV and a video with (1) a short introduction of yourself, (2) of the way you work, and (3) a description of a play you would like to direct with us to Esther van der Werf (esther[at]enthutrecht[dot]nl). If you have any questions about this position, please do not hesitate to contact Esther as well.
